First 48 Hours After Professional Hair Color: What to Do (From Your Hair Colorist)
By Mitzie’s Hair | September 10, 2026
One of my long-time clients told me, "I will not let anyone else touch my hair period", and I take that kind of trust seriously, especially when you leave my chair in Yonkers with fresh color. The single most important rule for the first 48 hours is simple: don’t shampoo or intentionally soak your hair for 24 to 48 hours. That window helps your tone settle so you keep that vibrant, natural-looking finish we worked for.

Quick context: A hair colorist doesn’t just “put color on.” I look at your starting level, your goal shade, your hair’s condition, and what will hold up in real life. That’s why aftercare matters as much as the appointment itself.
0–48 Hours: the rules that keep your color from fading fast
If you only follow a few directions, follow these. They’re the ones that protect your shine and keep your tone looking fresh instead of rushed.
My non-negotiables (especially after a single-process or double-process color)
- Hold off on washing for 24–48 hours. No shampoo, no long hot showers letting water run through your hair.
- If you must rinse: use cool water and skip shampoo. Blot, don’t rub, with a towel.
- Avoid heavy sweating for 48 hours. That includes hot yoga, spin, and anything that leaves your scalp drenched.
- Stay out of pools, hot tubs, and ocean water for 48–72 hours. Chlorine and salt don’t play nice with fresh color.
This matters even more in Yonkers in the summer. Heat and humidity make you want to wash more, and pool season can pull warmth into the hair fast. In the winter, the dry air can make hair feel rough, so people overdo hot water and heat tools. I’d rather you protect the color now than fight brassiness later.
And yes, I get it. Life is busy. If you’re commuting through Getty Square or Downtown Yonkers, you want your color to last through long work days and weekend events. These first two days are where you win or lose a lot of longevity.
First week after color: workouts, sun, and heat tools without ruining your tone
Once you’re past the first 48 hours, I still want you to treat your hair like it’s freshly done, because it is. This is the week where shine and softness either stay, or start slipping.
Exercise without washing every day
If you’re going back to the gym, keep a dry shampoo on deck and aim it at the roots, not the lengths. Tie your hair up gently, and avoid tight elastics that can stress hair that’s already been through a chemical service.
Sun and wind protection that actually helps
Sun is a big fade trigger. If you’re outside a lot, a hat is the easiest protection. A UV protectant spray can help too. It’s a small step that makes a difference, especially when you’re trying to stretch time between color appointments.
Heat styling: keep it low and smart
In the first week, I prefer you minimize flat-ironing and high heat blowouts. When you do use heat, use a thermal protectant and the lowest temperature that gets the job done. If you’ve got extensions, weaves, or a style that depends on set hair, tell me and I’ll walk you through what to do at home so you don’t undo the work.
Color-safe products I want in your shower (and what to avoid)
Keep it simple. Your goal is fewer washes, gentler cleansers, and serious moisture.
Use: sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and a rich conditioner. If your hair runs dry, add a weekly mask, especially during Yonkers winters.
Avoid: clarifying shampoos the first few weeks unless I tell you otherwise. They strip. Same thing with very hot water and constant scrubbing at the scalp.
Bridge between washes: dry shampoo at the roots, and a light oil or leave-in on the ends if they feel thirsty.
If you’re searching “hair salon near me” because you want color that looks good longer than a week, this is the part most people skip. The right shampoo and fewer washes protect your tone more than any filter ever will.
When to text or stop by in Getty Square (and what’s totally normal)
A little scalp sensitivity can happen after color, especially if you already had dryness or damage coming in. What I don’t want is you guessing at home, piling on random products, and making it worse.
Reach out to me if: your scalp feels persistently irritated after the first day, your color looks drastically different after one wash, or you’re noticing unusual shedding. I’m big on protecting your hair from further damage, and I’ll be straight with you about what’s going on and what I want you to do next.
"She takes her time explaining what needs to be done and she protects your hair from further damage."
one of our regulars
I’m right here in Downtown Yonkers, and I serve people coming in from Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, the Bronx, Pelham, Eastchester, and Hastings-on-Hudson all the time. If you’re a Metro-North commuter, it’s easy to do a quick check-in so you don’t wait until it’s a full-on fix.
Pricing and next steps: professional color, haircut color, and keeping it consistent
People ask “How much does a hair colorist cost?” and the honest answer is it depends on the type of color service and your hair’s starting point. My Professional Hair Color service is 60 minutes and starts at $157.5. If you’re pairing haircut color in the same season, tell me up front so I can plan your timing and keep your ends looking healthy.
Good to know: I also offer demi-permanent color (40 min), permanent color (2 hours), and double process color. If you’re doing loc color, I offer single and double process options too. We’ll pick what fits your goal and your hair’s condition.
If you’re new and feeling nervous, read what to expect for your first Professional Hair Color appointment. If your tone is already shifting, I also break down how I handle brassy or faded color. And if you want the bigger picture, check out why Professional Hair Color boosts confidence.
And if you’re also searching for hairstyling near me, weaves near me, extensions near me, or a haircut near me, bring that up at your color appointment. A lot of my regulars come to me because I can handle the full plan, not just one piece of it.
